Nancy Lee’s Follow Up from Creative Arts Roundtable

Last post was in regards to the “Creative Arts Roundtable” at Business Ownership Initiative (BOI) on August 24 -  a hit! The setup was with five local artists (the fifth, D. DelReverda-Jennings, was added after my last post) and an attorney specializing in helping artists with any/all legal issues related to their business. The amazing Tricia Guagliardo came up with the concept of having a program targeted towards artists, a first at BOI, and assembled the panel. The room was packed and fairly vibrating with an intangible goodness that evening, completely filled with enthusiastic artists and art enthusiasts. (Including, interestingly, Susan Gilmer, who is the process of writing about my story for a future BOI newsletter.)

In alphabetical order by last name, I learned a little more about what the panelists do and what drives them, what it takes to succeed in the business of art. Eventually I realized that even though my name falls in the middle of the alphabet, I was destined to go last – right after the attorney with the impressive credentials. No sense holding myself small, I told myself. So my words came from my heart with the hope they would land where they needed to.
My bit explained my early love of art, then metal, and how a tree falling on my studio and the loss of my job in construction management led me last year to my true calling – making jewelry and objects. And then a little bit about Social Media – at which point I plugged social media icon Kyle Lacy. My friend and media designer Stephen James happened to be in the room,  so I plugged him too and when he got up & spoke for a moment, the group asked what he did. He received a big round of applause for eloquently saying that he supported his talented wife, Rachel Steely James, so she could do her art.
Afterwards, a class member approached me and told me he, too, lost his job last year and was pursuing his former part-time art, and that my words resonated with him. Helped him see that there were others in the same boat, and we’re floating on the same water. A couple days ago, Tricia was kind enough to e-mail the class evaluations and I was overwhelmed by the positive comments given to the panel, and the encouragement to forge ahead that was resonated with the participants. This is something I’m certain will become a part of BOI’s offerings in the future.nsilogofinal
Maybe even better is the chance for people to come together in this difficult and wonderful time to let each other know the good that is there for us to find, when we take a minute to look.

First Post From Arrowmont

Nancy Lee at ArrowmontRolled into Arrowmont in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, on Wednesday evening – happy and tired.  Current Studio Assistant extraordinaire Justin greets me with an, “I’m sorry I can’t take you to your dorm, I’m doing a slide show in the auditorium right now, but let me tell you where it is and if you have a problem finding it, please come get me.” No worries, Justin. Found dorm, settled in and got fed.

On to Turtle Hollow Gallery!

A few days to call my own before my real duties begin will allow for some sightseeing. Where to go? A great place to start is the Gatlinburg Craft Map. My friend Wug Laku and I separately selected the same location from the craft map. It seemed we were on the same wavelength regarding Turtle Hollow Gallery, located on the 8-mile loop of artist studios and galleries. We were drawn in by the tiny picture in the brochure and the description of the work there.

An oasis of peaceful, well-designed beauty greeted us as the car rolled in to the gravel drive. The gallery sits in an amazing complex with other buildings, all designed by Ross Markley of Turtle Hollow. There is much to take in before ever setting foot inside one of the galleries. The exterior spaces were all designed and built by Ross Markley and peppered with his sculptural work, and must be experienced on their own. Beauty is abundant here.
Gallery Manager and fused-glass artist Kitty greeted us and showed us around the gallery, proudly letting us know that one of Ross’  sculptures had been on display at the Louvre.
Kitty’s glass work is the best example my companion, Wug, and I had ever experienced. Her sense of composition in her work, her color selections and designs were elegant and cool, yet playful and approachable. The gallery also represents work from several other artists, including detailed botanical paintings, drawings and etchings from nature artist Andrea Wilson, functional and sculptural ceramics, gorgeous wind chimes, jewelry, gourmet teas and more.

There were a couple more galleries in the complex but the owners/managers happened to be away at the time of our visit. Meaning, of course, a return trip in the near future.
If you are in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, this Turtle Hollow Gallery complex is a must-see!

Featured on the Business Ownership Initiative Website!

Great news! I am thrilled to be a featured client on the first page of the Business Ownership Initiative’s website. BOI helps people create and develop their own businesses. Since turning my part-time hobby into a full-time business venture in the fall of 2008, I have been consulting with and taking classes from the wonderful professionals at BOI.
They celebrated the birth of my new website with the following article:
BOI Client Approaches Turning Point With Excitement!
BOI client Nancy Lee, owner of nDesigns Metal, recently went full-time into her business making hand-fabricated precious metal sculpture, jewelry and objects, using her own designs. The artist has developed a new product line of small sculptures based on a “pod” concept that was on display at the Elegant Funk art show; her work has been described as sleek, minimalist and contemporary.
